In a match, glittered with numbers notched up by stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma, few of the other spectacular moments from the second ODI match between India and Sri Lanka, played in Mohali were overlooked. One of which was Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s stunning catch behind the stumps to dismiss Sri Lankan captain Thisara Perera.
Talking about the match, while Rohit stole the show with another sensational knock, Shikhar Dhawan (68 off 67) and rookie Shreyas Iyer (88 off 70) played the supporting role to perfection.
India virtually batted Sri Lanka out of the game by posting the highest-total at this ground, surpassing the 351 for five South Africa made against the Netherlands in 2011.
After completing his first 100 runs off 115 balls, the stylish opener was simply unstoppable, blasting the next 100 runs off 36 balls to complete a famous double ton in the 50th over of the innings.
Rohit smashed an unbeaten 208 off 153 balls to fire India to a mammoth 392 for four, a total that proved to be too much for Sri Lanka as the visitors ended way behind at 251 for 8 with Angelo Mathews’ unbeaten 111 going in vain.
Dhoni’s Outstanding Catch:
It was in the 31st over of Lanka’s innings. Yuzvendra Chahal was into the attack. Last ball of the over. Fuller of a delivery and placed it way outside leg stump. Perera looking to slog it over the square-leg region for a biggy failed to get enough of the bat as the ball got a nick of the inside edge of the bat, hit the pad and then the gloves and finally scooted up in the air to travel towards the short-leg region. Dhoni, with remarkable reflexes, sprinted in, dived and grabbed that stunner. Umpire waited for a few seconds an then raised his finger. The skipper departed for just five runs as the Lankans went six down with just 166 runs on the board.
